Meeting Ella Karlsson in Sham Shui Po

Three people in a room is not a maths problem, though men treat it like one.

What actually happens is that all the awkwardness lands in the first five minutes, and then it goes — because there's a second woman there who finds the whole thing as funny as I do, and it becomes an evening rather than a performance. She's warmer than me. I'm the one who suggests things.

On my own I'm no less trouble, only quieter about it. Couples too, provided you've actually talked about it beforehand and you're not planning to negotiate in front of me.

I'm expensive and I don't discount, which saves us both a conversation. What that buys is an evening nobody is rushing, a woman who has read what you wrote properly, and no moment at all where it feels like a transaction resuming.

Sham Shui Po, nights. Tell me what you're hoping for in plain words — the men who manage that get the best of me, and the ones who send a single word get nothing at all.

And if it turns out we don't suit each other, I'll say so in the first exchange rather than take your money and be professional about it for an evening. That happens perhaps twice a year and nobody has ever minded being told.
